 At a time of national crisis, the humble border hedge took on a renewed sense of purpose, its presence a vivid metaphor for self-isolation and social distancing. This series of suburban landscapes began n March 2020 during the permitted daily lockdown excursions in the 'bungalow belt'  of Edinburgh. Green space in cities brings many benefits for citizen's mental and physical health. As well as privacy, border hedges provide cover for nesting birds and reducing wind shear to give shelter to plants.
